Students of all ages must start at the beginning when learning a new language. Teachers must take advantage of the student’s existing language skills in order to get the ball rolling. It is important to make the experience positive, and to encourage fun, rewarding practice.
Students that are readers in their first language have a shortcut to learning to read in English. Encourage students to look for cognates (words that sound similar and have similar meanings between languages) and guide them to look for similar patterns in the structure. Languages parts are like puzzle pieces; students just need to be shown which pieces fit where.
For example, by discussing key concepts that might already be familiar prior to reading, students will have a topical foundation on which to build comprehension. Using pictures, video or acting out an idea helps English Learners use context clues to develop understanding and to make inferences while reading.
